An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of various levels of protein and lysine in diets for finisher pigs. Three diets were formulated to contain 14% and 0.65%, 12% and 0.65%, and 12% and 0.61% crude protein and lysine, respectively. All the 3 diets contained similar amounts of other nutrients. They were fed to pigs with an initial weight of 61 kg and were terminated when the pigs reached 82 kg. The average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (F/G) of the pigs fed the 3 diets were 0.53 and 4.21, 0.50 and 4.57, and 0.53 and 4.15, respectively. No significant (P.05) differences were observed for ADG and F/G among the treatment means. Results suggest that the performance of pigs was similar whether they were fed either 12% or 14% crude protein provided that lysine was maintained at same levels. Furthermore, reducing the protein level two percentage points and lysine levels to 0.02 percentage point for every reduction in crude protein gave similar performance compared to pigs in the other 2 treatments.
