Gastropod research: an overview [Philippines]
1987
Licuanan, W.Y. (Philippines Univ., Diliman, Quezon City (Philippines). Marine Science Inst.)
Research on local gastropods lagged behind that of other molluscs. Recent recognition of the importance led to studies on their role as intermediate hosts and as agricultural pests, and on the biochemical and pharmacological applications of their toxins and enzymes. There was a felt need for more biological and ecological studies to find new uses and to explore their potential for and possible impact of their culture. Also, there is a need to assess local populations and determine their ability or inability to withstand fishing pressure, as well as the ecological effects of their mass collection.
