Ten (10) lines derived by anther culture from Ponni (Mahsuri) were studied in a randomized block design with three replications from Dec 1986-May 1987. The anther culture-derived lines showed drastic reduction in duration, plant height, and grain yield but increased 1,000-grain weight. Panicle numbers and panicle lengths were not statistically different. The lines derived from Ponni can be used as alternate genetic sources of short stature in rice breeding.
