Screening for ragged stunt virus and brown plant hopper resistance in Thailand

The brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) and the ragged stunt virus disease (RSV) have been serious problems of rice in Thailand since 1975 and 1978, respectively. Outbreaks have usually occurred in the central plain. In deepwater rice (DWR), the BPH population in the field is generally very low, but severe RSV damage was reported in 1981. Screening for RSV and BPH resistance in DWR has been conducted since 1983. A total of 1,005 entries have been screened, and some resistant lines rescreened. Some promising lines - SPR7411-7-2-1, IR18420-1KN-1-1-00, IR28840-01-0-1, IR28608-1-2-0-1 and IR 11288-8-8-69-1 - have been identified as resistance sources for both RSV and BPH.
