Experiments were conducted during the 1987-88 dry season to determine the influence of applied irrigation water and naturally occurring water table depths in a toposequence on two varieties of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] in IRRI [International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines]. In line-source sprinkler irrigation experiment, saturated and field capacity treatments had more weeds than the dry treatment. In toposequential agrohydrology experiment, shallow and medium water table depths had more weeds than the deep water table depth. In both experiments, early maturing cultivars which had a high LAI [leaf area index] minimized weed problem as compared to the medium maturing one irrespective of moisture regimes
