Liu, G. | Saxena, R.C. | Wilkins, R.M.
Feeding behavior of whitebacked planthopper Sogatella furcifera on parafilm-wrapped resistant Rathw Heenati and susceptible TN1 rice plants was studied. Females excreted less honeydew on wrapped plants than on exposed ones. Electronic recording showed that females probed more frequently on wrapped TN1 plants than on exposed resistant plants. During each probe, the insect generally salivated longer on exposed plants than on wrapped ones, whether the plants were susceptible or resistant. Phloem feeding on plants was in the following order: exposed TN1 wrapped TN1 exposed Rathu Heenati wrapped Rathu Heenati. The insect sustained phloem feeding 70 min/probe on both wrapped and exposed TN1 plants. Phloem feeding on exposed Rathu Heenati plants was mostly 10 min/probe, indicating that resistant plants possessed feeding inhibitors or had a suboptimal nutrient balance
