Utilization of talisay [Terminalia catappa L.] leaves as source of black dye for textiles
De Guzman, Z.I. | Fernandez, E.B. | Villanueva, E.P.
A study to evaluate the potential of talisay leaves as source of block dye was conducted by PTRI [Philippine Textile Research Inst., Metro Manila, Philippines]. Sample of fresh talisay leaves were subjected to different extraction methods using water, ethyl alcohol and potassium hydroxide as solvents. Results showed that the water extraction method was effective and yielded 8% water-soluble brownish-black powder. The dye affinity of the talisay extract was evaluated using three dyeing applications on silk, ramie, cotton, and abaca samples. Dark black color was obtained on silk samples and lighter shade on ramie cotton and abaca samples using 5% copper sulfate as mordant, 35% ferrous sulfate as dyeing auxiliary and 70% talisay dye. The colorfastness was improved by 2% Tinofix EW, as fixing agent.
