The biology of the eggplant fruit and shoot borer Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee, the most serious pest of eggplant in the Philippines, was studied. The insect passed through six larval instars. The larval period ranged from 9-14 days with a mean of 10.85 days. The egg, pupa, and adult stages lasted for 4.12 +- 0.22, 9.44 +- 0.80, and 5.84 +- 1.05 days, respectively. Mating occurred a day after emergence; oviposition two to three days after mating. Adult females laid from 8-295 eggs (x= 118 eggs). The insect showed no preferred site for pupation. Infestation by the larvae started three weeks after transplanting. A single larva could infest several fruits or transfer from one plant to another. One species of Dermaptera and five species of hymenopterous parasitoids, namely: Apanteles sp., Chelonus sp., Brachymeria obscurata (Walker), Brachymeria sp., and Xanthopimpla punctata (P.), were observed to attack L. orbonalis in the field. Solanum tuberosum and S. nigrum confirmed alternate hosts of the pest.
