Clinico-pathologic and hematologic observations in goats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma evansi (Manila strain)

Fifteen apparently healthy goats were divided into three groups of five each and subsequently infected with Trypanosoma evansi (Manila strain) at the following dosages: 1 tryp/Gm burt., 10 tryp./Gm burt and 100 tryp./Gm burt for each of the groups. The groups that received the greatest number of trypanosoma experienced 100% mortality, a shorter prepatent period of 3.5-3 days and a greater reduction of PCV [packed cell volume] and TEC [total erythrocyte count]. The clinical signs manifested were emaciation with rapid loss of body condition, scrotal swelling, keratitis and nervous signs followed by prostration and death. Fever was not observed. A drop in body temperature may, however, herald impending death. The total mortality rate among infected goats was 81.82%. Leukocytosis due to sudden increases in neutrophils was a prominent feature of the infection. The disappearance of lymphocytes and eosinophils from the circulation is of prognostic value. Monocytosii can be used as a parameter for measuring the animal resistance to infection. Although goats have been reported to be refractory to T-evansi infections, it has been shown that large numbers of trypanosomes are capable of overwhelming host resistance and eventually resulting to death.
