The project was conducted to establish a benchmark information on pests attacking tobacco in the Philippines, disseminate tobacco crop protection information and technologies and facilitate their adoption and to create a feedback mechanism among NTA researchers, agriculturists and farmers, thereby promoting a closer relation among them. The project was started in October 1988 during the outbreak of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) epidemic in Region 1. Within the five year period the Pest Clinic identified location specific pests problems and pests management needs of tobacco farmers in 81 towns of 14 tobacco growing provinces all over the Philippines. The Pest Clinic conducted a six-month intensive training on tobacco pests diagnosis and management practices for 9 trainees from the branch offices who were later assigned as tobacco pests management specialists (TPMS). It published technopacks and leaflets on tobacco pests, diseases and management, namely: Tobacco Insect Pests, Diseases and Natural Enemies; Identification and Management; NTA Tobacco Production Illustrated Series vol. 1 no. 1; Gabay sa Wastong Pagpupunla ng Tabako, and "Panagpaksiat Kadagiti Peste iti Tinabakuan". For the research portion, the studies found that there is a 67 percent yield reduction if cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) infects the tobacco farms four weeks after transplanting. Moreover, a higher application rate of chlorpyrifos + BPMC and endosulfan produced toxicity symptoms on tobacco seedlings
