The study investigated the effect of reduction of tillage practices on grain yield and yield characters of wheat grown after rice. Field experiments with Kanchan variety of wheat were conducted over the 1989-90 and 1990-91 wheat growing seasons. Three tillage treatments-minimum (opening furrow), reduced (one ploughing and one laddering) and conventional (five ploughings and five ladderings) - were compared under irrigated and rainfed conditions. Tillage effects on grain yield averaged over irrigated and rainfed conditions were similar. Plant emergence and spike/sq.m. were significantly less in minimum tillage treatments whereas other yield components showed compensatory effect. Grain yield and most yield components showed better performance in reduced tillage treatment
