Effects of gypsum, farmyard manure, and N on ameliorating highly sodic soil and on yields of rice and wheat

Results showed that gypsum and FYM [farmyard manure] improved significantly the grain yield of rice and wheat and substantially decreased pH and ESP [exchangeable sodium percentage] of the soil profile compared with the control. When gypsum dose was reduced from 50 to 25 percent fof GR [gypsum requirement], with or without FYM, there was not significant decrease in the yield of either crop except rice during 1989. Gypsum 25 percent GR + FYM was significantly better than gypsum 50 percent GR and at par with gypsum 50 percent GR + FYM in decreasing soil pH and ESP and improving crop yields. Increasing N dose from 100 to 150 kg/ha significantly improved the yield of both crops. Interaction between N and other treatments, however, was not significant. Based on pooled analysis of the data, it is suggested that gypsum 25 percent GR with FYM 20 t/ha could be recommended to successfully ameliorate sodic soils and to maximize rice and wheat production
