Between 1985 and 1991 sixty four farmers from Claveria participated in an IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] research project on contour hedgerows and constructed the hedgerows in at least one parcel of their fields. These farmers were revisited in 1994 to take a fresh look at the status of hedgerows established at that time and to make assessment of factors determining adoption and retention of contour hedgerows. Of the 57 initial adopters interviewed, only 25 percent of the farmers had retained contour hedgerows. The farmers who discontinued contour hedgerows perceived the hedgerows as potentially beneficial but faced a range of constraints. The results based on a probit model of adoption showed that the farm size, the nature of crops grown and the off-farm incomes are the major variables determining adoption. The probability of adoption was found to increase with an increase in farm size, with an increase in cash cropping and with an increase in off-farm income. It is concluded that research and dissemination of contour hedgerows technology would benefit from better targetting of farmers
