Comparative study of structure and productivity of seagrass communities in the ASEAN Region
1994
Fortes, M.D.
The structure of seagrass communities and the biomass and productivity of selected species in the ASEAN region were compared and their geographical and taxonomic affinities analyzed using TWINSPAN. Philippines and the depauperate seagrass flora of Brunei Darussalam separates them out from the rest which forms a discrete phytogeographic unit, clustered in terms of species, the plant populations show a pattern that reflect inter-population affinities, further reflecting their true ecological requirements. Local seagrasses have potentials for high biomass and productivity. On a unit leaf area basis, there were no significant differences among the means of the parameters in the seagrass. However, the wide range of variabilities in biomass values points to the significant control of the site specific factors or the study procedures used. In contrast, the consistently narrow range in production rates suggest a fairly comparable set of study conditions. Although seagrass productivity has received considerable attention in recent years, it remains as one of the most imprecise as a result of varying techniques used and conditions under which the studies have been undertaken
