Preliminary assessment of Cavendish banana clones for resistance/tolerance to fusarium wilt

A rapid screening technique has been developed to evaluate young banana tissue culture plants for resistance/tolerance to fusarium wilt. Four-month-old banana tissue culture plants were inoculated with Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (FOC) race 4 isolates during the winter months. Assessment of resistance/tolerance was made four weeks after the plants were inoculated. The technique proved to be effective, and resulted in survival rates of between 0% and 70%. A total of 51 selected surviving clones were planted in four field-screening trials. The soil was heavily infested with FOC. From 51 somaclonal variants tested, 17 proved to be resistant/tolerant as no disease symptoms developed after 26 months. Dwarf Cavendish proved to be the best source to use, as it yielded 15 resistant/tolerant progenies. Most of the progeny are giant off-types. The other surviving clones originated from Sordwana, a local Cavendish type. The first ratoon suckers showed more resistance/tolerance than the original tissue culture mother plants
