Hispine beetles (Coleoptera:Chrysomelidae; Hispinae) of the Philippines
2001
Ballantes, M.G.
Eighty-three species of hispine beetles distributed in 22 genera and belonging to 12 tribes are treated taxonomically. Keys to tribes, genera and species were revised to update and modify the old ones while new keys were developed to initially separate the species of Lashiochila, Hispodonta, Octoodonta, Prionispa, Agonita, Downesia, Gonophora and Wallaceana. The genus Dactylispa has the most number of species followed by Promecotheca, Agoniella, Hispodonta and Agonita having 15,10,9,8 and 7 species, respectively. The other genera include species ranging from 1 to 5. Six new species are described namely: Cypenispa rattana, Agoniella truncata (Genophorini), A. sanjuanensis, Promecotheca bambusa, P. paloleytea and P. baltazarae. Among the hispine species, P. cumingii Baly, a coconut leafminer, is considered a pest of economic importance. Its population reached epidemic levels (1930 and 1967) in the twentieth century. About ninety percent of the host plants of the Hispinae are monocotyledons like Poaceas, Arecaceae, Zingiberaceae, Cyperaceae, Orchidaceae and Commelinaceae while the rest feed on dicotyledons like Convolvulaceae, Verbanaceae and on a few undetermined hosts.
