Assessment of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) collection by tribes in the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu [India]

A study was carried out in the forest villages of Pollachi range and Sathyamangalam range in western ghats of Tamil Nadu to assess the role of NTFPs in the income and employment generation of tribal people residing in these forest areas. The main occupation of tribal people in Pollachi and Sathyamangalam ranges was the collection of NTFPs. Among the various forest products identified in forest areas, Kadukai. Tamarind, Amla, Pungam, Mango, Broomstick, honey, Poochakai (Soapnut) and Sekakai were found to be the major sources of income. The income generated from NTFPs in the Sathyamangalam range was more (17088.20 rupees) than that at Pollachi range (6338.90 Rs). The number of days employed in NTFPs collection in Pollachi was 119.43 man days and for Sathyamangalam it was 220.5 man days a year. In Sathyamangalam range 36.85% of total employment was through broomstick collection followed by amla collection (26.30%). Maximum days of employment in Pollachi were on tamarind collection (36.83%) followed by Poochakai collection (25.83%). The tribal people spent 6.23 hrs and 6.33 hrs for collection of Kadukai in Sathyamangalam and Pollachi ranges respectively
