Pollution damages associated with an aluminum sulfate manufacturing firm in Antipolo City, Philippines

The study assessed the damages allegedly caused by pollution emitted by an aluminum sulfate manufacturing firm (ASMF) that became physically noticeable in August of 1998. Damages range from health impacts, destruction of properties to an agricultural losses. The impact zone of pollution was divided into two concentric zones: Area 1 covers residents living within 500 m radius from the factory; and Area 2 consists of residents within 501-1000 m radius. From the 95 residents who were interviewed, as many as 41% suffered from minor skin and eye irritations and respiratory diseases, 24% had their roofs damaged, 15% reported losses from clothing exposed during the event, while 26% claimed crop losses. The total material damage allegedly caused by the factory amounted to P891,787 with agricultural damage reaching P2.4 M. The biggest loss was in terms of health damage which was valued at P3.5 M. The respondents were asked if they were willing to contribute some amount to finance the operation of a monitoring team that could help prevent occurrence of a similar environmental disaster. Seventy percent of Area 1 respondents and 60% from Area 2 were willing to pay a mean value of P407/year and P66/year, respectively. The analysis revealed that residents near potential source of pollution were willing to pay a positive amount to avoid pollution-induced damages, as the latter could be a substantial sum as shown in the study
