The South East Asian Botanical Collections Information Network (SEABCIN) is a collaborative project between herbaria in Indonesia (BO, WAN), Malaysia (KEP, SAN, SAR), the Philippines(PNH), Thailand (BFK), Singapore (SING), the Netherlands (L) and the U.K. (FAO). The project is co-financed by the European Commission (EC). During the past two years a web accessible data base has been created through which the institutes (and others) can now search each and others collection of databases. Additional tools are being developed, e.g. to compare identifications of duplicates between institutes and mark the discrepancies, to create maps, to do floral analyses and to allow downloads. Other results obtained within SEABCIN are the creation of the dictionaries for collectors, taxa and gazeteers (for the Malesian region) as well as the introduction of standardized data entry routines. In the future SEABCIN will expand from the collection level information to taxon level information (keys, distributions, plates), library references, DNA analyses, possibilities to interlink other types of information, etc. Once the SEABCIN website is officially opened other institutes are welcome to join. Access to the database will be limited to prevent misuse of data, but full admission to the database can be obtained and will probably be easily granted to collaborators in the Flora Malesiana Project.
