Microorganisms may be employed in various capacities to help improve our environment. They can be used to monitor pollution, treat wastes, remediate polluted sites and waterways, and even prevent pollution itself. As environmental monitor, microorganisms can be developed as biosensors and/or biomarkers. They may be used in the biological treatment of wastes, in membrane reactors, or as sources of bioremediation products directly applied to waste materials. Equally useful as bioremediation, agents, they or their products may be used for treatments of polluted sites or commodities, affecting actual breakdown of the pollutant, or extracting and/or sequestrating pollutants and limiting their bioavailability to susceptible organisms. To prevent or limit further pollution, microorganisms can also be developed to replace industrial processes that degrade the environment, synthesize materials to replace non-biodegradable products and produce biofuels. With genetic manipulation, their utilities can further be enhanced, at the same time minimizing potential adverse effects on environmental and human health.
