Sustainability for TGMS [Thermosensitive genetic male sterile] breeding in the highlands of Negros Occidental [Philippines]

Twenty-eight TGMS [thermosensetive genetic male sterile] lines were evaluated on their suitability to breeding and multiplication in Spar 18, Brgy. [barangay, village] Bunga, Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental from August 6 to August 24, 2004. At 2,495 ft above sea level, 15 lines were suitable in the area as manifested by their spikelet fertility. The 15 suitable lines included: AN 55, TGMS6,AN 32, AN 38, TGMS 17, AN 34-2, AN 36, AN 40-5, AN 34, AN5, TGMS 12A, TGMS 17A, AN38-3, and TGMS 12. The lines with the highest percentage fertility were AN55, TGMS 6, AN32, AN38, AN 40-5. Minimal infection on BLB, bacterial leaf streak (BLS) and rice blast (RB) was observed. However, some lines were succeptible to RTV and sheath blight.
