Dendrobium sibuyanense Arquiza, Naranja, Baldos and Sacdalan, sp. Nov., a new orchid specie in the Philippines

A new species of Dendrobium belonging to section Euphlebium was found in sibuyan Island, Romblon, Philippines. It is hereby named Dendrobium sibuyanense Arquiza, Naranja, Baldos, and Sacdalan, sp. Nov.. The plant is an ephyphytic herb with semi-pendulous pseudobulbs. It normally has three alive leaves at any one time. Like most of its relatives, it has a lanceolate leaves that are dark green and glossy on top and light green on the underside. The flowers are small, usually only 2.5 cm in diameter, and are slightly fragrant. when compared with other Dendrobium with similar features, it is in the labellum where most of the differences can be noted. It has a yellow orange labellum with red blotches on the tip, middle and base compared with the purple lobes of D. bazeranium Fessel and Lueckel, white with orange blush on the lateral lobes of D. orbilobutatum and the pink veined red with the same yellow in the middle of D. spurium (Blume) J. J. Smith. D. sibuyanense was first sited in a forest trail near MT. Nailog in the same island with an elevation of almost 500-700m above sea level. It grows naturally on tree trunks sparsely covered with moss.
