The Spanish Red (Ananas comosus L.) pineapple is the source of fine and quality fiber in weaving the pina cloth popular the world over when made into the famous Barong Tagalog, ternos and other formal attire. Traditionally, this crop is grown vegetatively through crowns, slips and suckers. However, at Aklan State University [Philippines], Spanish Red pineapple is grown in vitro (tissue culture) using slips were cultured onto MS medium fortified with benzylaminopurine (BAP). Studies showed that BAP supplemented to MS medium at 7 ppm gave significant effect on the percentage of callus formation, number and height of shoots as well as adventitious buds formation.
