Yield performance of rice hybrids developed at IRRI from 2005-2007

One hundred ninety-eight elite experimental hybrids at IRRI were planted in the Advanced Yield Test in the station from 2005 to 2007. There were 134 three-line hybrids and 64 two-line hybrids tested. The three-line hybrid IR82363H has exhibited in the range of 13-23% standard heterosis over the inbred check and 3-20% heterosis over Mestizo 3 in three seasons of testing. Another promising three-line hybrid is IR82372H which showed 12-22% heterosis over RC82 and 3-23% heterosis over the hybrid check in also 3 seasons of yield testing. Results are not as promising for 2-line hybrids that were tested during the same period. While 2-line hybrid IR83201 H has shown 8-20% heterosis over RC52, it gave -6 to 25% heterosis over the hybrid check in 4 seasons of testing. Another 2-line is IR82378H which exhibited 0.2 to 10% standard heterosis over Mestizo 3 in three seasons of tests. The poor heterosis shown by the two line hybrids indicate the apparent narrow genetic diversity among their parents. There is a need to initiate a breeding program which will increase the diversity of the parents.
