GIS- based suitability assessment of grassland area for lesser known fruit tree species: a case study in Carranglan [Philippines grasslands]

Grasslands are considered marginal areas and therefore unsuitable for annual crops cultivation because of their biophysical characteristics and frequent occurrences of fire. However, because of the anticipated impact of climate change in agricultural production, grassland areas are now being considered as areas for agricultural expansion to augment food production supply, improve rural income and enhance environmental security of watershed vegetated with grasses. This study applied geographic information (GIS) system in order to determine the suitability of grassland areas in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija for the cultivation of lesser known fruit trees. It also illustrates how GIS can be used for biophysical characterization of the study area. These fruit tree species include Cashew (Anacardium occidentale), Duhat (Syzygium cumini), and Bignay (Antidesma bunius L.) which are believed to thrive in grasslands because of their ability to resist the harsh environmental conditions and recurrent fires which are common problems in these areas.
