A sustainable hybrid rice production system is being developed at PhilRice Isabela to enhance capacity of rice4 farmers in producing hybrid rice. The project capacitates rice farmers to produce their own hybrid rice seeds from A x R production and cultivation of the F1 in a small farm scale. For one ha field, the CMS seed production is planted in 30 sq m of the field, 20 sq m for R-line multiplication, 500 sq m for F1 seed production, and 9400 sq m for F1 cultivation. In 2009 DS, pilot studies were done in Roxas, Isabela, and Sta Teresita, Cagayan where 36 farmers were trained. The seeds produced from the learning fields supplied the seeds of M7 and M1 that the farmer graduates planted during the wet season. Following the4 overwhelming impression and interest of rice farmers, the project was replicated in Sta. Teresita and Solana, Cagayan and in Kiangan, Ifugao. The project extends to nine sites in 2010 as part of the technology promotion for hybrid rice production in Northeast Luzon.
