The study was conducted to characterize and analyze the dynamics of agroforestry landscape development in the Tigbi sub-watershed of the Makiling Forest Reserve (MFR) in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. The long history of farming in th MFR is a product of purposive behavior of farmers to make economic use of the land and combine different factors over time and space. The Tigbi sub-watershed has remained a segregated agroforestry landscape. In the segregated agroforestry landscape, the roles of trees are to stabilize the slopes and control soil erosion. Because of the steep slopes within the sub-watershed, there are fewer occupants whose activities are concentrated in particular areas only. The spatial limitations in terms of the area available for crop production may have also led farmers in this portion of the watershed to go into a more intensive cultivation practices. The farmers recognize the need to maintain patches or corridors of natural forests for soil and water conservation purposes. Their placements in the landscape are therefore, more defined and clearly delineated. There is no intimate association between trees and agricultural crops among the individual farms. Each component is kept apart or segregated.
