Yield performance and bioefficacy of Bt eggplants tested across multiple locations and seasons in the Philippines

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is one of the most important vegetable crops in the Philippines but its production is severely decreased due to damage caused by its major insect pest, the eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB), Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee. Because no effective source of resistance is available from cultivated eggplant species, Bt technology was employed to develop EFSB-resistant eggplants for the Philippine market. The Bt gene from an elite line from India was transferred to selected Philippine varieties through backcross breeding, from where 5 promising Bt-eggplant lines were selected and advanced in succeeding generations. In this study, the yield performance and efficacy against EFSB the five eggplant promising lines, their two non-Bt parent lines and a non-Bt commercial check variety were evaluated under natural field conditions with and without insecticide treatment against EFSB in WS 2010 and DS 2010-2011 at three locations across Luzon ( Laguna, Pangasinan and Camarines Sur ). Overall, the five Bt eggplant lines produced significantly higher total yield and marketable yield and sustained significantly lower shoot and fruit damage compared with their non-Bt parents and the commercial check variety across location in both seasons. Variation in yield and efficacy among the five Bt lines were observed. Four out of the five lines tested were selected for further advancement and variety release. The field performance of the Bt-eggplant under local conditions provided empirical proof that the technology can be effectively used under Philippine conditions and present opportunities to reduce input cost and pesticide use that can harm human health and the environment.
