Testcross performance evaluation is vital in developing elite inbred lines as parents in hybrid maize breeding programs. Narrow-genetic base testers are usually more efficient in establishing heterotic groups however most of them are limited and unavailable in public breeding institutions. The authors explored the possibility of using broad-genetic base testers in selecting promising lines of flint-type yellow and white maize. In 2014, 19-20 S sub 4 lines of yellow maize and 31 S sub 7 lines of white maize are crossed to IPB Var 9 and Population 62, respectively. In addition, both groups of advanced lines were crossed to IPB Var 13. Testcross progenies were planted in replicated trials at two environments (UPLB and CMU) on 2015 Wet Season. S sub 4 crossed to IPB Var 13 showed highly significant differences (alpha = 0.01) in terms of yield (ton/ha), days to anthesis and silking, and number of ears per plot while those crossed with IPB Var 9 differed in days to silking, plant height (cm), and stand count. On the other hand, S sub 7 lines crossed with IPB Var 13 differed significantly in terms of ear height (cm), ear length (cm), and ear diameter (cm), wherein those crossed with Population 62 significantly differed in yield (ton/ha), plant height (cm), ear height (cm), stand count, number of ears per plot, and ear length (cm) at alpha = 0.01. S sub 4 line 10 x IPB Var 13 and S sub 7 line 12 x Population 62 exhibited promising yield output. These lines are potential parents in developing yellow and white maize hybrids, respectively. Overall, IPB Var 13 is likely a more efficient tester of S sub 4 yellow maize lines than IPB Var 9 while Population 62 is a more appropriate tester to S sub 7 white maize lines than IPB Var 13.
