Design, construction and testing of wood-element hygrostat [Philippines]
1984
Palenzuela, R.L. | Hernandez, D.M.
Studies conducted on local wood species, Apitong (Dipterocarpus grandiflorus Blanco) was found suitable as wood-element hygrostat with a tangential shrinkage and specific gravity of 13.52% and 0.63, respectively, comparable to birch and maple having a specific gravity of 0.50. Specimen size of 0.635 cm x 2.54 cm x 10.16 cm (1/4" x 1" x 4") was taken from 460 cm x 12.7 cm x 2.54 cm (2' x 5" x 1") boards, dried to 12% MC at the Hildebrand Experimental dry kiln at the Wood Seasoning Laboratory. The microswitch used was of the normally closed type, with a protruding contact point, designed for a current load of 3000 watts. Calibration of the designed wood-element hygrostat to control equilibrium moisture content at 12% was conducted using the relative humidity cabinet
