Belomo, A.T. (Central Philippines Univ., Iloilo City (Philippines). Coll. of Agriculture)
It is a mechanical dryer that operates at a relatively high temperature for a rapid drying of high-moisture paddy. It employs single stage and multistage systems of drying. The dryer comes in three models: RFD-40D, RFD-60D, and RFD-80D. Each is suited to the manufacturers'/users' affordability. The size also varies depending on the volume of paddy to be dried. The dryer has the following advantages: it employs conduction heating of grain which makes drying possible even at humid condition; it has a high throughput capacity and less power requirement per unit size; it employs practical drying strategies which minimize sprouting and/or spoilage of the paddy; it dries paddy with a better milling recovery and storability as a result of partial gelatinization and disinfection of grain. It is easy to fabricate with the use of locally available construction materials. It utilizes rice hull, coconut husks, and other agrowaste fuel that are readily available in the farm. The use of the dryer can benefit the rice millers. It can dry their paddy fast and can ensure them of good quality grains. With a minimum landholding of 0.4 ha, the machine can still operate and realize profits after 0.23 year (2.76 months). Cooperatives and big rice millers can likewise invest and benefit from the dryer. The rotary flash dryer's total operating cost ranges from P39,112 to P105,325/year. Annual net profit of P95,812 to P569,250 and a return on investment of 436% to 517% can be realized at 0.18 to 0.23 year (2.16 to 2.76 months) payback period.
