Bean breeding in the SADC region
1995
Mushi, Clemence S.
The status of varietal improvement in different countries in the SADC region is described. The Southern Africa Regional Bean Nursery and Trial as a means of exchange of germplasm within the region are briefly discussed. Emphasis is now breeding for specific traits such as resistance to bean stem maggot, bruchid, anthracnose, BCMV, angular leaf spot, and drought. Regionally funded sub-projects are important for these activities to achieve targets. Technique used in Tanzania for integrating farmer expertise into bean varietal development is also described.
