Introduction of climbing beans in the non-traditional zones for this crop in the center and the south of the country should help increase bean yields in this region. A follow-up study of bean promotion in these zones has revealed that major adoption problems relate mainly to low soil fertility, to lack of stakes and to var. not sufficiently adapted. On-farm research has therefore mainly concentrated on increasing diversity of genetic material besides Umubano, and on resolving the staking problem with agroforestry spp. and the use of living support (maize) intercropped with the climbers.
