Properties of Conventional Greenhouse Production in Kepez Township of Antalya

In our country greenhouse cultivation has developed according to the prevailing climatic conditions and become widespread at the Mediterranean coast where the climate is suitable. In this coastal area, Antalya is the leading province with 47.2% of greenhouses located in the Mediterranean Region and 38.8% of greenhouses of Turkey. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate greenhouse cultivation in Antalya-Kepez where the number of protected cultivation holdings was the highest. For this purpose, data was collected with direct contact via the questionnaires from 45 producers selected according to purposive sampling during the summer months of 2011 in Kepez in order to reveal information related to greenhouse producers, operation and greenhouse structure, production, selection of species and varieties, marketing and their problems. The results obtained showed that the majority of producers are primary school graduates, production has realized in greenhouses covered with PE and iron-framed, insect net is not used in greenhouses particularly having side air vent, heating has done only for frost protection, plants are grown in soil and mostly tomato, cucumber and strawberry are grown as long season crop production. It has drawn attention that soil analysis is not realized and synthetic chemicals are used in excessive amounts. It’s determined that producers make variety selections based on themselves or dealers’ orientations and the most common criteria that are taken into consideration is pest and disease resistance, seedling usage has increased and the majority has started with non-grafted seedlings, pesticide dealers are the most common agricultural information source for the growers, growers are dissatisfied due to lack of information and controls, not-well-timed controls most of the products are sold in wholesale market hall and price is determined by broker.
