Northeast (NE) Thailand is situated between 19O to 14O N latitude and 101O to 106O E longitude. It encompasses 17.02 million ha – roughly one-third of the entire country and is the poorest region of Thailand in terms of resources, economy and household income. Most of the region’s inhabitants are small holding, low income farmers who face diverse agricultural and resource problems related to extreme environmental variability, adverse climate, poor soils and limited, often unreliable water resources.
