The effects of azadirachtin on the ecdysis and on the ecdysteroid titres of Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee were studied. RIA analysis showed that the haemolymph ecdysteroid titre of the normal fifth instar larvae reached a peak (326.9 ng/ml haemolymph) on the 6th day after moulting, and by day 7, dropped gradually to 46.0 ng/ml haemolymph. the larvae gegan to pupate the 7th day. After feeding on the diet treated with 74 ppm azadirachtin, the growth and ecdysis were suppressed. They made no attempt to moult, and the residuals still remained in the gut after death. Hamolymph ecdysteroid titres did not rise (lower than 20 ng/ml haemolymph) throughout the fifth instar. It is concluded that the ecdysteroid synthese were inhibited
