Ecological aspects of herbicide use in maize

Conditions in maize production will become worse in future. The possibility of chemical plant protection, especially weed control in water protection and water catchment areas will become smaller with regard to ecological aspects. From this, in specific sensitive pedological and hydrological areas former cropping systems have to be restricted or abandoned. In general, the part of maize in crop rotation has to be reduced in order to comply with the conditions of environmentally compatible farming. Maize should to be cropped with more regard to local soil conditions. In every case it is necessary to check different systems of weed control in maize. If it is possible to avoid chemical weed control, herbicides should be applied post-emergence. If possible, application rates per hectare should be reduced by band spraying. In intercropping systems with direct drilling into the overwintering catch crop the amount of pesticides applied is not reduced
