Ethylene production, ACC and conjugated ACC levels as relatated to symptom development in leaves of tomato and Gynura aurantiaca infected with citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) were studied. In both hosts, the infection induced an increase in ethylene production and ACC levels and a strong accumulation of conjugated ACC. Contrary to what happens with the stimulation of ethylene production and the enhancing of ACC content which maintains a steady level as leaves and their symptoms develop, conjugated ACC accumulation increased with the intensification of symptoms
