Comparative toxicity of pesticides to birds

Comparative statistics were performed on avian toxicity data from acute oral tests and subacute tests. The data base consists of all available LD50 and LC50 data of pesticides that are currently registered in Germany. The eight species that were most frequently tested are ranked by decreasing sensitivity in the following order: red-winged blackbird - domestic pigeon and house sparrow -mallard, bobwhite quail, Japanese quail and ring-necked pheasant - domestic chicken. The sensitivity is significantly different between these four groups, however, the variability is large and every other order is possible. When the LD50 values of the Japanese quail were compared to those of other species 23 per cent of the data pairs differed by more than 4-fold and 6.1 per cent by more than 10-fold. If data on 5 or more species were available for the same pesticide the range between the most sensitive and least sensitive species generally encompassed a factor of 5-30 and sometimes a factor of more than 100
