Variation between strains of the nematophagous endoparasitic fungus Catenaria anguillulae Sorokin. 2. Attempts to achieve parasitism of Heterodera schachtii Schmidt in pot trials

The antagonistic potential of three different Catenaria anguillulae isolates against the cyst nematode Heterodera schachtii was evaluated in pot trials, with emphasis on the influence of time and frequency of inoculation. Two fo the three isolates (C4, C10) reduced significantly the number of cysts produced. One isolate (C11) showed no effect on the H. schachtii population. However, all isolates were detected on females/cysts incubated on streptomycin-agar. Apparently only young, white females were infected. After 8 weeks, at the end of the experiments, every isolate could be reisolated from the soil. Differences in persistence or distribution in the soil were not recorded.
