Some remarks to history of forest sustainability

In reply to a publication of Peter Mathe in this journal and to introductory remarks of Ulrich Grober in the reprint of old 'Sylvicultural oeconomica' of Hans Carl von Carlowitz it is to be considered necessary to rectify and to complete: Attempts to use forests sustainedly have been made already since the Middle Ages, to a higher degree since the 16th century. H.C. von Carlowitz probably at first used the term 'nachhaltig' ('sustained'), but his knowledge about sustained forestutilization or management was limited, was based on already existing knowledge and extended this not fundamentally, and there was no practical sustained forestry at his time. The real formation of the principle of sustained yield theoretically based andpractically effective began after the middle of 18th century in the frame of developing forest science and forestry. Forest management planning became the instrument of putting through sustainability.
