The effect of avocado idioblast oil cells on larval survival and growth of a generalist herbivore, Spodoptera exigua was examined. Activity was recorded using no-choice artificial diet bioassays initiated with cohorts of newly hatched larvae, at concentrations similar to those found naturally in avocados (2/ of tissue volume). After 9 days, the idioblast cells significantly reduced S. exigua larval weight and increased larval mortality at concentrations below those found in avocados. Our results suggest that the presence of idioblast oil cells may explain partially why S. exigua, a polyphagous herbivore and a major pest of many agricultural crops, is not adapted to feed on avocados
