Geoarchaeology of Egypt and the Mediterranean: Reconstructing Holocene landscapes and human occupation history

From 19 to 21 September 2010, the first international colloquium on geoarchaeology to be held in Egypt took place in Cairo. Entitled "Landscape Archaeology: Egypt and the Mediterranean World", it was attended by 200 scientists from 25 countries. This major scientific event was jointly organised by the Institut Français d'Archéologie Orientale (IFAO, Cairo, Egypt), the Centre Européen de Recherche et d'Enseignement des Géosciences de l'Environnement (CEREGE, UMR 7330, CNRS, Aix-en-Provence, France) and the Centre Franco-Égyptien d'Étude des Temples de Karnak (CFEETK, USR 3172, CNRS, Karnak, Egypt), and was strongly supported by the Supreme Council of Egyptian Antiquities (SCA) and the Centre Français de Culture et de Coopération du Caire (Egypt). The meeting was held under the patronage of the Geographical Society of Egypt (director: Safey Abulezz) and the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG). The colloquium hosted 10 thematic sessions and comprised 60 oral presentations, in English or French, and ca. 40 poster presentations. In addition, a doctoral workshop took place in Upper Egypt and offered 15 PhD candidates the opportunity to explore the hydrological landscapes of the Nile River together with the human occupation of the Theban Valley, strongly influenced during the Holocene by the position of one of the world's largest rivers.
