Effects of anthropication on the fish community in a dystrophic reservoir : Charpal (France) - a case study | Effets de l'anthropisation sur le peuplement piscicole d'un réservoir dystrophe : Charpal (France) - étude de cas

French. L'étude concerne un petit réservoir (180 ha, profondeur moyenne : 6 m) sur substrat granitique à 1300 m d`altitude, pour évaluer son potentiel pour la pêche sportive. Le peuplement piscicole initial à base de Salmo trutta, de Phoxinus phoxinus et Gobio gobio a été remplacé par des populations de Perca fluviatilis et de Esox lucius introduites illégalement. Les pêches de contrôles (1999-2001) ont montré que la perche et le brochet représentaient 95% du peuplement en biomasse et en effectifs. La proportion d`individus de grande taille indique une sous-exploitation par la pêche sportive. L`acidité de l`eau (pH< 6.5) et la limnologie du site nous ont incité à effectuer des analyses toxicologiques. Celles-ci ont révélé que les poissons présents dans le réservoir étaient fortement contaminés par du mercure et impropres à la consommation humaine, tandis que les poissons présents soit dans les tributaires ou à l`aval du barrage (truite, vairon) ne montraient aucun signe de bio-accumulation métallique. Si ce problème a déjà été signalé (Amérique du Nord, Scandinavie) sur des sites de même type, c`est le premier cas identifié en France d`une bio-contamination mercurielle d`une communauté piscicole qui ne soit pas due à une pollution anthropique directe.

English. The study concerned a small reservoir (area : 180 ha ; mean depth : 6 m) on granitic substratumsituated at an elevation of 1300 m a.s.l to assess its potential for sport fishing. The initial community formed by Salmo trutta, Phoxinus phoxinus and Gobio gobio, has been replaced by Perca fluviatilis and Esox lucius populations after illegal introductions. These two species represent now 95% of the community (biomass and numbers). The results of water quality analyses and the dystrophic status of the lake incited to make toxicological analyses in the fish. These showed that the Perch and the Pike contained higher concentrations of Me-Hg (0.2 to 4 mg Hg/kg fresh muscle) than the accepted dose for human consumption. Fish from the tributaries and from downstream were not contaminated. Although such contamination problems were encountered elsewhere (North America, Scandinavia) its is the first case of fish intoxication by mercury from non-anthopic origin mentioned in France.
