The hypersensitive reaction of Petunia axillaris cv. ‘M’ to TMV‐SM1 strain is accompanied by the production of 4 unusual proteins in the tissues around the necrotic local lesions. These proteins called d1, d2, d3 and d4, according to their decreasing electrophoretic mobility, are composed of a monomer of either 27,000 d (d2 and d4), 34,500 d (d3) or 20,000 d (d1). They do not appear to be related to the b1 of the PR (b) proteins synthesized by Nicotiana species in response to TMV infection.
