Sustainable crop-animal farming systems in developing countries

Sustainable agriculture has been emphasized in agricultural production during the past decade because of apparent erosion of natural resources and the environment--the consequence of using unsound agricultural practices. Mixed crop-animal farming systems have been traditionally practiced in rural areas of developing countries. In most cases, these integrated farming systems have been shown to be sustainable and efficient. But improvement of these farming systems has not received fair support and attention. The lack of an effective methodology to show clearly the significant benefits in terms of interactions in the mixed farming systems has been a major problem. To achieve sustainable agriculture in developing countries, research and development of integrated or mixed crop-animal farming systems must be promoted
