Reproductive behaviour of Bos indicus crossed cattle on the intermediate savannahs - 1. seasonal variations in productivity in Zebu and Santa Gertrudis X creole cattle
1969
Holder, N.L.
Calf birth dates and number of calves born were obtained over a 10-year period (1958-1968) from one herd of zebu cattle, one pure bred herd of Santa Gertrudis and two herds of Santa Gertrudis X Crede (Zebu) females at Ebini Livestock Research Station. The zebu herd was kept solely on the range, and the other animals were kept under good management on improved pastures, mainly pangola grass. Graphical analysis of the results when considered with the rainfall pattern and its effect on pasture production suggest that conception occurs most readily when forage material is plentiful on pasture, that is, during the rainy seasons. Although the breed of dam was an important determinant of the calf birth weight, the between-breed variation in birth weights during the year was insignificant
