Comparative study on the "gaplek" and fresh cassava tuber in Central Java
1991
Bagyo, A.S.
The reasons for farmers to sell cassava in the form of fresh tuber are willingness of bustle and simplicity. Particularly in the "tebasan" systems, farmers just receive money in cash without doing anything. Consequently the farmers always gain losses due to low price of cassava in harvesting period with abundance of production. For farmers who sell cassava in the form of gaplek (dried cassava), they got a better price since they can store "gaplek" longer, while waiting for the price to become higher. In the rainfed area, when cassava was harvested, farmers have enough time to process cassava into gaplek. The objective of this study is to determine additional income of farmers who sell gaplek as compared to farmers who sell fresh tuber. Morever, to determine additional profit of middlemen who deal in gaplek compared with such profit of middlemen who deal in fresh tuber. Result of the study shows that farmers who sold gaplek had additional income of Rp 334,800 or 21 percent higher than such income of farmers who sold fresh tuber. Village middlemen who sold gaplek got additional profit of Rp 276 per qt or 31 percent than such profit of village middlemen who sold fresh tuber. Moreover, Kecamatan middlemen who sold gaplek got additional profit Rp 475 per qt or 46 percent higher compared with such profit of Kecamatan middlemen who sold fresh tuber
