[Effect of raw material soaking in NaOH solution on absorption to activated carbon taken from rice husks]

Seleng, T. | Lembang, J.T. (Balai Industri, Ujung Pandang (Indonesia))
An experiment for making active charcoal from rice hull has been carried out. Some of the hull was soaked in a 10 percent NaOH solution and some others was no pretreatment. The hull was placed for charcoal making by carbonization processes in a closed container at various temperatures. To test its iodine absorbility, the charcoal of each pretreatment was soaked again in a 5 percent CaCl2, solution, after which the charcoal was activated again in the closed container at various temperatures. The results showed that the highest charcoal content (i.e. 43, 25 percent) and the highest Iodine absorbility (i.e. 17, 40 percent) were found from the NaOH-soaked hull and at a carbonization process temperature of 250 degree C
