We studied the growth and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.) which was planted in intercropping system with king grass (Pennisetum purpureophoides) in dry land area. In this study, the units of rice planting area were divided into 4 groups of treatments as follows: A - plot of rice in a distance of 0-50 cm from king grass rows; B - plot of rice in a distance of 50-100 cm; C - plot of rice in a distance of 101-150 cm; and D - plot of rice situated in center of rice planting area about 400 cm from king grass rows. Width of king grass rows about 50 cm, and distance between king grass rows as width of unit of rice planting area about 8 meters. This study was arranged in a randomized block design with 4 replications. The results indicated that plots of rice which were planted close to king grass rows obtained inhibition on growth and yield. The growth and yield of rice which were planted far from king grass rows (treatment C and D) were higher than those of A and B (close to king grass rows). The growth of king grass during the growth period of rice showed an increase in plant height and green leaves production per clump
